The World Without Us: Haleakala

By Erica Harney

Oil and scenic latex on muslin

I create bizarre, slightly foreboding landscape paintings using scrap materials from my professional work making large-scale scenic displays and murals and superimposed with scenes of natural and manmade environments. Working in the entertainment, production and fabrication industries keeps me acutely aware of the colossal amount of waste they produce, and I now primarily create my personal work with materials that I can salvage, such as scrap lumber and muslin. I use leftover scenic and mural paint to ground my canvases, and sometimes even peel dried paint from mixing buckets to use as a collage element. My color palettes and underpaintings are inspired by my collection of used stir-sticks that I have been saving for years, suggesting scenes of eerie dystopia. My current body of work is inspired by Alan Weisman's "The World Without Us," (which describes a hypothetical post-human world where the environment has begun to “re-wild") as well as my own avid interest in environmental efforts) and my extensive travels throughout the natural world.

This particular painting is inspired by my travels to Maui.
